My newest book is The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. I haven't started reading it yet but it's about Oscar, an apparent overweight "lovesick ghetto nerd" who is enthralled with fantasy fiction and has hopes of becoming a Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien. Oscar's inability to obtain what he desires can be blamed on the multi-generational family curse that has haunted his family from the Dominican Republic all the way to the United States. It just won the Pulitzer Prize and has received excellent reviews. The cover design is quite nice. I hope to start reading it later today.
My favorite books today still seem to be the ones I remember most vividly from my childhood. This includes Eloise and The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. They both have in common young girls galavanting about NYC. No wonder I like them so much...
