The Demel.
One of my favorite places in Vienna was The Demel, an old fashioned cake and chocolate store that has been around since 1786. It is the kind of place that I dream about but never thought actually existed. Like everything else in Vienna, it remains preserved in time, completely untouched by the modern world. The waitresses wear crisp black and white uniforms and the cakes look exactly like they did when were served to Austrian royalty hundreds of years ago. It was delightful to sit at the counter and eat Sachertorte, the famous Viennese chocolate cake with apricot marmalade, and sip delicious hot chocolate. Afterwards we bought these chocolate bars that come wrapped in the most beautiful paper. I just love how the Demel is printed in quirky cursive on the chocolate.
